New Year’s Resolution to stop the TPP rally
On Tuesday, January 12, 2016 the New York State Alliance for Retired Americans rallied to stop the TPP trade deal. The rally was timed to coincide with the President’s State of the Union address where he promoted the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade bill which is a continuation of past trade bills, like NAFTA and CAFTA, that have not met their objectives of job creation or an enhanced American economy. Called by many NAFTA on Steroids this bill has the potential to depress job growth, increase the cost of prescription drugs, negatively impact the environment, promote currency manipulation and create and expand a corporate tribunal that can override our laws to maintain corporate profits. This rally was to educate citizens and our legislators to the dangerous consequences of passing this law.
Speakers included: Barry A. Kaufmann, President of NYSARA, Frank Natalie, Executive Vire President of the Capital District Area Labor Federation and Business Manager of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 7, Bill Ritchie, President of the Albany Central Labor Council, Steve Redler, Political Chair of the Hudson Mohawk Chapter of the Sierra Club, Blue Careker, representing Citizens Action and the upstate coordinator for the paid family leave coalition and Steve Mann, Deputy NYS Director for US Senator Charles Schumer, who reiterated Senator Schumer’s longtime position to OPPOSE the TPP trade deal. The Citizens Trade Commission and Move On were represented as well.
