A Conversation with Congressman Paul Tonko December 20, 2016 Hosted by the Capital District Chapter of NYSARA

On Tuesday December 20, 2016 the Capital District chapter of NYSARA held a “Conversation with Congressman Paul Tonko.

It was a pleasure to host Congressman Tonko in Latham as he spoke to more than 75 people about his concerns as this new President -elect chooses his cabinet. Then he took Questions from the floor guided by our Vice President for Community, Gail Myers of Statewide Senior Action. It was an enthusiastic audience who appreciated his message. The Congressman made it clear that we must keep “bothering him” and all in Congress, to advocate for senior issues and for other issues  of importance to you and your community. A short Capital District Chapter meeting was then held.

President Karen Wojcik-Hess thanked the audience for coming. She mentioned an important Spring 2017 event the Chapter was planning , a workshop on Run Away Inequality ,based on the book by Les Leopold. She then introduced Charlie Albanetti of Citizen Action to speak about the 3 hour workshop he will lead for us in April. The book (an activist’s guideline to economic justice) by Les Leopold were available.

The meeting ended with an address from our NYSARA President Barry Kaufmann who reminded us of the many things we should give our attention to including stepping up our activism in this challenging time.  We must be aware that issues we thought were ingrained in this country are not “safe” in the current climate.  We need to grow our numbers and our activism to defend Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act from imminent attacks.
