Things New York Seniors Need to Know About the Big Awful Budget Bill Passed by Republicans That Have Been Passed Over or Hidden.

1.    The Senate Bill Increases the Cuts to Medicaid to $1.1 trillion.  Almost $300 billion more than the awful House bill. (63% of nursing home residents use Medicaid to pay)

2.   Medicaid Cuts do not take place until after the Mid-term elections.  Hiding the draconian cuts that will harm working men and women and seniors trying to fool you that the Republicans did not continue massive tax breaks for millionaires, billionaires and multi-national corporations while taking healthcare and nutrition programs away from working people and seniors.

3.   The $186 billion in Snap cuts actually cut 20% from Snap (food stamps) Senior nutrition and meals on wheels.

4.   There is NO removal of Social security taxes as the White House claims. However there IS an up to $6,000 deduction for people over 65 who make less than $75,000 for a single or $150,000 for a married couple.  This phases out when you make more than $75,000 single/$150,000 married. and ends in 2028. You actually do better with this deduction.   Stopping the taxes on Social Security is harmful to the program as these taxes go directly BACK to the Social Security trust fund to help continue its solvency.  The taxes DO NOT go into the general fund.  The President knows that decreasing the income to Social Security “starves” the program and makes it easier to privatize the program. That’s partially why he gave a FICA holiday during his first term.

5.   Because of the $3.3 trillion – $3.9 trillion increase to the deficit a law adopted in 2010 called “pay as you go” makes automatic cuts to the budget including an almost $500 billion cut to Medicare.

6.   Because New York Gets Massive Medicaid funding (Federal/state Program) so cuts can impact the NY budget by up to $5.5 billion exploding a huge hole in the NYS budget which may have to take money from many other important priorities. (Education, Senior programs, Roads etc.)
